EXTREME PHYSICS MEETING

Ferrara, September 23-24, 2014

The purpose of this meeting is to bring researchers from across Europe together to work on the preparation of the proposal to Horizon2020 for a Centre of Excellence in Physics at Extreme Scales.

This meeting is a follow up of an earlier workshop held in Edinburgh on April 15th, 2014. The expected outcome of this meeting are firm decisions on the management structure of the Centre and on its Workpackage structure as well as a detailed definition of all steps of the process leading to the finalization of the project proposal, to be submitted to H2020 in early January, 2015.

MEETING VENUE

The meeting will take place at Department of Physics (BUILDING C - ROOM 412 - 4th FLOOR), University of Ferrara, Via Saragat 1, 44122, Ferrara, Italy.

Ferrara lies 50 km north of Bologna in Emilia–Romagna. Ferrara is a nice middle-age and renaissance city, rich in architecture and culture. A large part of the city centre is for pedestrians only, bicycles are ubiquitous. Sometimes referred to as ‘Italy’s best-kept secret' Ferrara has been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on account of its architectural elegance and cultural significance. The University of Ferrara was founded in 1391. Perhaps unexpectedly, Nicolaus Copernicus graduated in Ferrara.

To Reach Ferrara:

By train:

Ferrara is served by the Bologna-Venice railway line. Several regional trains take around 30 minutes from Bologna, and 1 hour 20 minutes from Venezia and Mestre. The Departement is close to the station. On leaving the station turn right, take the 3C bus at the bus stop after the taxi area. Leave at the next stop, marked Facoltà di Ingegneria. The Department entrance is very close to the stop. If you like you can also walk:on leaving the station turn right, and go straight for about 1 Km along Via S. Giacomo (see map below for details).

By plane:

The nearest airports are Bologna (BLQ) and Venice (VCE), served by major and low-cost airlines.

From Bologna airport there are several options:

- take the "BLQ" bus to Bologna train station. The bus stop is located on the right leaving the main terminal building at the street  level. Bus starts approximately every 20 minutes and takes around 30 minutes. See here for details.

- take the "Bus&Fly" direct bus to Ferrara train station. There are 8 runs per day taking around 60 minutes; See here for details. To get to the Departement get-off at "Ferrara stazione" (raiway station); to get to hotels get-off at "Ferrara Viale Cavour-centro" (city center).

- take a taxi; it should take around 40 minutes and the fare is around 100 Euros, making it  an affordable option if shared by  a group of 3-4 people.

From Venice airport:

- take the bus to Mestre or Venice Santa Lucia railway station; from there take any train to Ferrara. Be aware that several high-speed trains (going to Bari, Bologna, Rome and Naples) do not stop in Ferrara.

By car, coming from North:

leave the  A13 tollway (Bologna-Padua) at the Ferrara Nord exit; follow the sings to the Railway Station through Via Eridano, Via Modena, Viale Po; one you arrive at station go straight for 1.1 km (see map).

By car, coming from South:

leave the A13 tollway (Bologna-Padua) at the Ferrara Sud exit; following the signs for the city center through Via Bologna, turn left in Via Vittore Veneziani, up to the end of Via Aldo Ferraresi and finally follow the directions for the "Facolta' di Ingegneria".
