Training objectives

The goal of the course is a basic formation in the fields of mechanics and theromdynamics.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematical analysis, geometry, vectorial and differential calculus.

Course programme

Section 0: Introductory concepts: measurement. Section 1: Vectorial calculul elements. Scalar and vectorial quantities; free and applied vectors; operations between vectors; systems of vectors. Section 2: kinematics of single point. Velocity and acceleration. Examples of different motions. Section 3: Dynamics of single point. Forces. The Newton's principles. Examples of forces. The concepts of energy and work. Conservative forces and potential energy. Conservation of energy, Linear momentum and angular momentum. Conservation of linear and angular momentum.
Section 4: angular motion and its description.
Section 5: dynamics of a system of points. Section 6: dynamics of rigid body. Center of mass and moment of inertia. Rotational kinetic energy. Angular momentum of a rigid body. Conservation of angular momentum. The gyroscope. Section 7: Static of the rigid body. Section 8: introduction to the elastic body. Section 9: temperature, heat and first principle of thermodynamics. Gas laws and ideal gases. Section 10: Second principle of thermodynamics and entropy.

Didactic methods

The course will consist in theorical lectures integrated by practical execises devoted to a better understanding and application of the various concepts.

Learning assessment procedures

Partial proofs to verify the acquisition of the various arguments will be introduced at the end of each cycle of lectures.
