Training objectives
- To provide students with the knowledge necessary to properly understand the economic and productive reality, with specific reference to firms, their functioning and the problems deriving from organisational aspects and innovative dynamics.
Prerequisites
- None
Course programme
- The aim of the first part of the course is to describe the basic economic concepts that will be used to subsequently understand the economic reality within which operate the firms.
Then, a more detailed analysis of the concept of firm as economic agent is provided, identifying the problems linked to choices in the short, medium and long run (studying therefore the trend of total, medium and marginal product and the structure of production costs).
The final part of the course analyses the inside of the firm, to study its nature, its organisation and its functioning. Particular emphasis will be posed on the structural changes as a consequence of choices of efficiency maximisation, of problems of internal balance and of adaptation to external changes. In this framework, some problems linked to technological innovation and its impact on competitive dynamics will be analysed. The course will end with a part on the evaluation of organisation's results, as a whole and in its elements. Didactic methods
- Lectures (especially in the first part), accompanied by collective discussion on real case studies and lectures from entrepreneurs.
Learning assessment procedures
- written test: made of open questions and a comment to a real case study, which requires the use of the learned notions.
An optional oral test at the end of the term Reference texts
