Training objectives

Basic on telecommunication networks. Analysis of the main algorithms and standards for layer 2, 3 and 4. Principle of internet. Skill on network design and analysis.

Prerequisites

Mathematics: derivatives, integrals, differential equations, Z transform and Laplace transform.

Course programme

Digital networks classification.
Topologies.
Network architecture and OSI model.
Circuit and packet switching.
Markov processes and queue systems: (M/M/1, M/M/, M/M/c, M/M/1/K, M/M/K/K, M/G/1, G/M/1).
Packet correctness (FEC e ARQ).
Multiple access techniques (TDMA, FDMA, Polling, Aloha, Slotted Aloha, CSMA).
Queue networks.
Routing algorithms (Dijkstra, hot potatoe, multipath routing).
Congestion control end-to-end (with sliding window) and hop by hop (input stop).
Layer 2 standards: 802.3 802.4 802.5, FDDI, 802.6, 802.11.
Circuit switching analysis.
Network installation and management: repeater, hub, bridge, switch, router.
Introduction to the Internet and its services.
Protocols ICMP, IPv4, ARP. DHCP, DNS, Proxy.
Wireless system generation 2 e 3, 2.5 e 4.
Stack TCP/IP.
Port analisys: 80 web, html; 443 ssl; 25 smtp, 110 pop3, 143 imap, 25 smnp, 53 dns.
DNS and mail structure.
Intserv e diffserv.
Routing: Bellman-Ford, distance vector, link state, aodv.
Level 2 and 3 addressing.
IGMP. Reverse path forwarding. DVMRP e PIM. I
PV4 class.
ICMP.
IGP e EGP systems: RIP, OSPF, BGP. Autonomous system.
UDP.
TCP: packet format, delayed ack, dup ack, RTO e RTT. Flux control and congestion avoidance with TCP. Fast recovery e di timeout.
IPv6: introduction, packet format, addressing and e DNS, header e ICMP.
Mobile IP: concepts, addressing, agents, registrations, packet delivery, optimization.
Security: private key, public key, hash. Security architecture and IPsec.
Multimedia systems: RTP e RTCP.
Security system in Internet: layers 2, 3 e 7.

Didactic methods

Theory is followed by example discussed by the teacher. Some hint for home further investigation are given. Some thesis to simulate experiment is given and discussed.

Learning assessment procedures

Passing the final exam is the proof that knowledge and abilities outlined in the training objectives of the course have been achieved.

Thesis on a programme items to be admitted at the oral examination. Oral examination on all the course programme with three questions. Final vote is obtained by the sum of thesis and answers evaluations.
