Training objectives
- Aim of the course is to deepen the knowledge on vector calculus and to acquire some elements on tensor algebra and calculus; to find centers of mass and inertia matrices of (mainly planar) material figures; to study kinematics and dynamics of rigid and deformable systems; to determine equilibrium configurations; to study the stability of equilibria and compute the normal modes' frequencies; to evaluate constraints reaction forces both at equilibrium and in dynamical configurations.
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of analytic geometry, linear and vector algebra, differential and integral calculus, as well as of point kinematics and dynamics.
Course programme
- Vector calculus' recall. Free vs point vectors. Torque of a point vectors system and its properties. Couple. Equivalence of point vectors system. Center of mass. Moment of inertia. Inertia matrix. Fundamentals of tensor algebra and calculus. Kinematics of deformation. Rigid kinematics. Dynamics of planar rigid systems. Contrained rigid systems. Equilibrium configurations. Constraint reaction forces and their evaluation.
Didactic methods
- Theoretical/practical lessons.
Learning assessment procedures
- Written/oral examination. Passing the written test is mandatory to access the final (oral) exam. The final examination has the aim to ascertain an operative knowledge of the whole contents of the course.
