Training objectives

The aim of the course is to provide basic methodologies for the fluiddynamics design of turbomachinery. The adopted metodology considers the "external" design of turbomachinery, through the use of statistical correlations, the one-dimensinal design, and the two-dimensional design, with the development and application of aerodynamic techniques.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of "Macchine" course of Mechanical Engineering Degree

Course programme

1) Definition of turbomachinery; dimensional analysis and theory of similitude; turbomachinery classification; statistical correlations for the “external” design of the turbomachinery.
2) One-dimensional theory of turbomachinery; streamline plotting on the meridian plane; procedures for the design of radial and axial flow turbomachinery; assessment of the effects of the finite number of blades according to Stodola and Pfleiderer methods; blade profile plotting through point-to-point and conformal representation methods.
3) Two-dimensional fluid flow theory. Aerodynamic of wing sections: influence of Mach number, aspect ratio and thickness-to-chord ratio. Aerodynamic theory. Overlapping of aerodynamic effects. NACA wing sections.
4) Blade cascades performance: evaluation of cascade effect; design of cascade geometry through Weinig, Howell and Carter methods; blade plotting.
5) Two-dimensional flow in radial turbomachinery. Study of the irrotational flow through stationary radial cascades by means of the conformal transformation method. Study of flow through radial impellers: outline.
